The Process

The Process

Sand carving, also known as sand blasting is a method of decorating and personalizing items that adds an impressive appearance to glass, crystal, stone, ceramics and similar materials.

The artwork is prepared or converted into a vector graphic by scanning or redrawing your artwork in a computer graphics program. The artwork is sent to a vinyl plotter or printer to produce a vinyl or photo mask which is then prepared for each item to be carved. The vinyl or photo mask is applied by hand to the item and the remainder of the item is masked with tape to prevent over spray during the carving process.

An abrasive sand-like material (aluminum oxide) is then propelled with high pressure air onto the surface subsequently carving the open areas of the mask.
